Self-Esteem and Aging
All of us, every one of us, has many, many strengths and some areas that need a bit of improvement. I won’t say weaknesses, no, I won’t, that’s too negative. As we age, we are going to change. Our looks will change. Some wrinkles, some body shifts, maybe some hair loss and a frosting of beautiful grey and silver threads on our heads. Hopefully our attitudes change. More tolerance, less anger, please.
My Dad used to sing the song, “Dear, I fear we’re getting older, silver threads among the gold.” Wow, a barbershop quartet favorite song, from 1873! Some tunes endure and get better over time. Just like us, we get better over time.
If we can think of ourselves as a fine wine, aging gracefully in our body bottles, it will help this season of our lives. I hope I don’t sound like a Pollyanna, I have many down moments, but they are random moments in an otherwise hopeful day.
Sometimes my friends will run down their bodies. Too fat, too thick, big hips, big gut, bad feet- enough of this. We are like bronze statues- after time a beautiful patina, golden and glowing, like Lincoln’s nose, shines from within us. It illuminates our faces and draws people closer to us. Battle scars, certainly, but I prefer to think of us with fine lines like the Mona Lisa.
